Huskies Barely Edged by Thunderbirds

The Morgan field hockey squad remains winless in the 2013 season at 0-4 after falling to North Branford 1-0 in a tight Shoreline Conference matchup on Sept. 23.

The Huskies had trouble moving the ball up field and were only able to generate two shots in the game. Morgan's best chance to tie the contest came with about two minutes to play. The Huskies had two of their three corner attempts down the home stretch, but North Branford halted any pressure the Huskies tried to sustain and held on to improve to 4-1.

"We just need to take our time and find our groove," Head Coach Melissa Fritze said. "Right now, we need to play a lot more two-touch hockey and really get the ball moving. I think we had a lot of seniors graduate and a lot of underclassmen are still getting used to filling in those spots and supporting each other so we just need to start finding our way and get some shots on cage."

Morgan was at its strongest at the defensive end. North Branford held possession in its zone throughout the game, but the Huskies didn't crack and allow the Thunderbirds to break open the game.

Goalkeeper Kate Eveland made 10 saves and Fritze was happy to see a closer result, as opposed to some of the more lopsided games Morgan has lost this season.

"They've been working really hard on staying on balls, staying on the girls, and communicating," Fritze said. "They'll find their way. It's just going to take a while, but 1-0 is better considering the last couple of games we allowed more goals. This was nice to actually walk away with somewhat of a better score."

The Huskies were lucky, however, to escape this game having been down in numbers. Midway through the second half, senior captain Rory Smith walked off the field on her own power, but was being tested for a possible concussion after taking a shoulder to the head while going for a loose ball.

Later in the half, Isabella Pitarra was hit with a slap shot, went down, and also walked off the field. Both players were evaluated by the trainer and Fritze feels confident they wouldn't miss any further time.

"They're going to be fine," she said. "One of them got hit in the head, they're checking her for a concussion, but the other one was just whacked five times in several spots so I just put a sophomore in at her spot to let her get some playing time."
