An East Haven police detective, already under suspension, turned himself into inspectors of the state Department of Motor Vehicles on charges related to the theft of a stolen 2009 Chevrolet Corvette valued at over $43,000.

Detective Robert Ranfone, 47, was charged with tampering with or fabricating physical evidence, a felony, hindering prosecution, a felony, and interfering with a police officer, a misdemeanor.

He is due in court on the charges on October 17th. He was released on $10,000 bond.

According to a statement from the DMV: “Inspectors assigned to the Auto Theft Unit served an arrest warrant on Robert Ranfone related to the investigation of a stolen Chevrolet Corvette.

“The investigation is being conducted in cooperation with the New Haven State’s Attorney Office with additional arrests expected. Also arrested in relation to this investigation was Steven Tracey, 48, of New Haven, on similar charges.

Tracey was also released on $10,000 bond with an October 17th court date.

Ranfone has been suspended from the police department after an incident in January 2013 where he and several other officers allegedly violated a woman’s constitutional rights while investigating a purse theft. He has not been charged in that case.

East Haven police released the following statement: “Detective Ranfone has been suspended pending the outcome of an internal investigation. The East Haven Police Department has no further information or comment at this time.’’

DMV officials declined further comment.
