New London — Police are investigating the Wednesday night assault of a 27-year-old man in the area of 240 Hempstead St.

Police said they responded to the scene at 8:53 p.m. for a report of an assault. Police found that the victim had sustained a head laceration and facial swelling.

The victim told police that he accompanied the assailant to Stonington, where a drug deal took place. When they returned to New London, the assailant struck the victim several times about the face and head with his hands, causing the injuries, police said.

The assailant then took off in his car, which contained several of the victim’s personal belongings.
