A 34-year-old man who is serving a 78-month prison sentence for sexually assaulting a young boy and filming the assaults has been charged with additional child pornography crimes following a forensic analysis of materials seized from his home.
Jason Lenares, 34, formerly of Colchester and Middletown, is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in New London Superior Court on a charge of first-degree possession of child pornography.
According to an arrest warrant affidavit, members of the state police Computer Crimes and Electronic Evidence Laboratory and FBI searched Lenares’ home at 164 Norwich Ave. in Colchester in February 2009. The investigators had obtained a search warrant after the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children reported that somebody using the screen name firstname.lastname@example.org was suspected of sending images of child pornography. Computer crimes investigators later served a search warrant on Lenares’ home at the time, in Middletown, after receiving information that he was sharing child pornograpy online.
During an interview with the investigators, Lenares told them they would find images of him having sex with a young boy, whose family he knew, over a number of years. He was convicted in Middlesex Superior Court of risk of injury to a minor and second-degree possession of child pornography and sentenced to 15 years in prison, suspended after 78 months served and 10 years of probation, and is required to register as a sexual offender.
The state police forensic laboratory, which has experienced major backlogs, completed an examination of the materials seized in Colchester earlier this year and applied for an arrest warrant, according to New London Superior Court prosecutor Theresa Anne Ferryman. According to the affidavit used to obtain the warrant, the investigators found 1,360 still images and 47 video movie files depicting boys and girls ages 4 to 12 involved in explicit sexual acts.
Lenares is currently housed at the Osborn Correctional Institution in Somers with a maximum release date of September 2016, according to the Department of Correction.
