Rhode Island 911 emergency system goes down

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Officials in Rhode Island are investigating an emergency phone system outage.

WPRI-TV reports that the 911 system is running after an outage Monday night. Laura Meade Kirk, a spokesperson for the Department of Public Safety, says calls were affected between 7:41 p.m. and 8:49 p.m. Kirk says during that time emergency dispatchers could hear callers but callers could not hear dispatchers.

Officials say dispatchers tried to return any emergency calls that were made during the system outage by using caller ID.

State Police Capt. John Allen says at least 30 calls were affected. Authorities continue to investigate the technical cause of the outage.
