High school football capsules / Week 8
New London at Fitch, 6:30 p.m.
Records: New London (4-2, 0-0 ECC Large Division); Fitch (2-5, 0-2)
Last week: New London defeated Griswold 39-7; Fitch defeated St. Bernard 40-14
Outlook: New London assistant coach Tommie Major likes to yell "the train's comin'!" at various octaves. He might be right. The Whalers have won three straight and open divisional play tonight. They have some major bonus-point games ahead, meaning that if they stay hot, they can make the state playoffs. Fitch snapped a losing streak last week against St. Bernard/Norwich Tech.
NFA at East Lyme, 6:30 p.m.
Records: NFA (5-1, 1-0 ECC Large); East Lyme (4-2, 1-0)
Last week: NFA defeated Cranston West 28-7; East Lyme lost to Stonington 42-28
Outlook: This is for first place in the ECC Large Division. NFA must keep winning to keep pace in Class LL. The Wildcats have played well since their loss to Glastonbury in early October. East Lyme's four-game win streak ended last week, despite quarterback Mitchell Murphy's 207 passing yards and two touchdown passes to Dean Beebe.
Montville at Ledyard, 6:30 p.m.
Records: Montville (4-3, 2-1 ECC Medium Division); Ledyard (6-1, 2-0)
Last week: Montville lost to Killingly 26-21; Ledyard defeated Woodstock 48-0
Outlook: The winner of this game is the leader in the ECC Medium Division. Montville lost a 14-point halftime lead at Killingly last week and eventually the game to the Redmen. The Indians cost themselves dearly in the Class S playoff race, but could play themselves back in with a victory. Ledyard can all but clinch the division with a win and move toward a home game in the Class M playoffs.
St. Bernard/Norwich Tech at Griswold, 6:30 p.m.
Records: St. Bernard/Norwich Tech (1-6, 0-3 ECC Small Division); Griswold (4-3, 3-0)
Last week: St. Bernard/Norwich Tech lost to Fitch 40-14; Griswold lost to New London 39-7.
Outlook: Griswold is closing in on the ECC Small Division title. The Wolverines are unbeaten in the division and can wrap it up with a victory in this game. St. Bernard/Norwich Tech has lost five straight.
Bacon at Stonington, 6:30 p.m.
Records: Bacon (2-4, 1-2 ECC Medium Division); Stonington (4-2, 1-1)
Last week: Bacon was idle; Stonington defeated East Lyme 42-28
Outlook: Stonington is one of the league's hottest teams, the winners of four straight. The Bears have played their way into the final playoff spot in Class M, but face a difficult schedule for the rest of the month. Their offense was very efficient last week against East Lyme with quarterback Divante White and backs Matt Mitchell, Harry Calmar and Zach Poirier.
Ellington/Somers at Valley/Old Lyme, 6:30 p.m.
Records: Ellington/Somers (4-3, 4-1 Pequot North); Valley/Old Lyme (6-0, 4-0 Pequot South)
Last week: Ellington/Somers defeated Windsor Locks/Suffield/East Granby 41-26; Valley/Old Lyme defeated Morgan 51-6
Outlook: Valley/Old Lyme is playing its way toward the top seed in the Class M playoffs, following impressive wins over North Branford and Morgan. Ellington/Somers has won three of its last four following a 1-2 start.
