Groton - The Groton Board of Education will hold a special meeting Monday night to discuss the contract terms for Michael H. Graner, who was offered and accepted the job as superintendent of Groton Public Schools on Oct. 7.
The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in the school administration building, and the discussion is expected to take place in executive session. The board may or may not take action after that session ends.
One issue likely to be discussed is salary. Board members have not spoken about the issue publicly since Graner's hire, but at the time they advertised the job, they decided to offer a salary range of $170,000 to $185,000.
The board chose the range after its search consultant McPherson & Jacobson LLC compared the salaries, vacation time and other benefits offered by six districts in southeastern Connecticut, including Stonington, Waterford, Ledyard and East Lyme.
The superintendent salary in Groton - $167,475 - was below five of its neighbors.
School board Vice Chairwoman Elizabeth Gianacoplos said Friday the contract encompasses other issues, such as evaluations.
"It's not just money," she said. "It's the language of the contract." She said it was possible the board would take a vote Monday, but she wasn't sure.
Graner's start date could also be discussed. At the time of the offer, he said he would work out details with Groton but probably would start around Jan. 1.
He has been Ledyard superintendent for 10 years, and his contract in Ledyard has a 90-day clause.
The new job will take Graner from a school district with 2,559 students to one with a student body of 4,826 this year.
