New London — Police charged a man with robbery Saturday afternoon after they say he demanded a pack of cigarettes from a clerk at the Ravi store on Bank Street.

Darren McNair, 46, of no certain address, was charged with third-degree robbery and sixth-degree larceny after the 12:48 p.m. incident.

According to police, a store clerk reported that a man told him to hand over a pack of cigarettes or be hurt. No weapon was shown. Fearing for his safety, police said the clerk handed the cigarettes to the six-foot, three-inch man who weighed between 250 and 275 pounds. Police then located a man matching the description of the robber in the area of the Parade and took him into custody. They also recovered the cigarettes. McNair was held on a $2,500 bond and is slated to appear in New London Superior Court on Monday.

Cranberry sauce: Whether it's the home made stuff containing actual cranberries or the reddish jelly shaped like the can it plopped out of, it reminds me of childhood.

Turkey, of course: Turkey slathered in gravy. Turkey with cranberry sauce (see above). Turkey with mashed potatoes on it. Turkey in sandwiches the next day. All I care about is the golden bird.

My Thanksgiving has been completely taken over by the ever-earlier Black Friday sales. My big meal will be looking more like a fast food burger in line outside of Best Buy than the traditional sit-down meals from days of ole.
