Waterford — About 40 firefighters from four departments in town are currently battling a massive brush fire at the former landfill on Miner Lane.
Firefighters responded about 3:30 p.m. to a blaze in a 50-foot-high brush pile that measures 300 feet long.
Goshen Fire Chief Don Chapman said the brush is stored at the landfill before being turned into mulch. He said the fire marshal is being called to the scene to determine the cause of the fire, which is sending towering flames into the sky and prompting smoke complaints from residents in neighboring New London. He said firefighters are working to pull the brush apart and extinguish it.
Firefighters from Goshen, Jordan, Oswegatchie and Quaker Hill are at the scene. Tankers for Oakdale and Center Groton fire departments have also responded.
