Newtown — State police on Tuesday arrested a registered sexual offender from Montville on child pornography possession charges.
Christopher T. Berchem, 39, of 984 Route 32, Unit 12A, is charged with first-degree illegal possession of child pornography and promoting a minor in an obscene performance.
The arrest was made by warrant and stems from an investigation started in 2009 by the state police computer crimes unit. Police were investigating the sharing of child pornography over the Internet and tracked the Internet activity to Berchem’s former residence at 32 Housatonic Drive in Sandy Hook, police said in a statement.
In 2010, state police joined with Newtown police and executed a search-and-seizure warrant at the Sandy Hook residence. Police said they seized evidence from the home that included computer files that later forensic examination revealed to be child pornography.
Berchem was processed at Troop E in Montville and held in lieu of a $50,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear today in Danbury Superior Court.
Berchem’s criminal history includes convictions for the charge of risk of injury to a minor, or impairing the morals of a child, in both 1998 and 2000, according to the state’s sexual offender registry.
