A Navy veteran and career correction officer who had hundreds of images of child pornography in his Groton home was sentenced Wednesday in New London Superior Court to 15 months in prison, 10 years of strict probation and registry as a sex offender.

Mark Veroneau, 52, had pleaded guilty to two counts of voyeurism in addition to possession of child pornography. According to prosecutor Theresa Anne Ferryman, Veroneau had been videotaping and photographing family members in compromising positions.

Veroneau, who had been honorably discharged from the Navy, had worked for the Department of Correction for 18 years before Groton Town Police executed a search warrant at his home on Spyglass Circle in January and seized computers and other materials containing child pornography.

In arguing for a sentence reduction, defense attorney Matthew G. Berger said Veroneau had no previous criminal record, had received commendations from his employers and had made careful provisions for his dependent children while he is incarcerated. Veroneau has been deemed at low risk of becoming a predator and has taken responsibility for his crimes, Berger said. He resigned from the Department of Correction before he was vested for his pension and has extensive health problems, Berger said.

“I think at this point, the life he had is over,” Berger said.

Judge Susan B. Handy said Veroneau had not only viewed despicable images of child pornography but was also spying on family members “in various stages of undress.”

“I find that very disturbing,” Handy said. “You, sir, have sabotaged a stellar career. You’ve sabotaged your family.”

As our children crash from Halloween candy overload, we look ahead to the next big holiday: Thanksgiving. What are you looking forward to seeing on your dining room table on the 4th Thursday of November?
Cranberry sauce: Whether it's the home made stuff containing actual cranberries or the reddish jelly shaped like the can it plopped out of, it reminds me of childhood.

Turkey, of course: Turkey slathered in gravy. Turkey with cranberry sauce (see above). Turkey with mashed potatoes on it. Turkey in sandwiches the next day. All I care about is the golden bird.

My Thanksgiving has been completely taken over by the ever-earlier Black Friday sales. My big meal will be looking more like a fast food burger in line outside of Best Buy than the traditional sit-down meals from days of ole.
