Post-game breakdown, video: Stanford

A bad shooting night doomed UConn on Wednesday night.

The 10th-ranked Huskies shot a season-low 31.7 percent from the field.

In the second half, they converted just five of 31 shots and scored 13 points.

It all added up to their first defeat of the season.

Stanford 53, UConn 51.

The Huskies fell to 9-1.

Here’s an abbreviated post-game breakdown:

-- Check out the attached video of coach Kevin Ollie’s press conference.

-- Of course, Ollie was disappointed with his team’s play, especially on the offensive end.

“Just a tough shooting night,” Ollie said. “I can’t even blame it on the layoff.”

UConn was coming off a 12-day exam break.

-- Only junior DeAndre Daniels, who finished with a team-high 15 points, had a good shooting night, converting 6 of 10 from the field.

The guard trio of Shabazz Napier (4-for-13, 12 points), Ryan Boatright (3-for-11, 7 points) and Omar Calhoun (1-for-8, 3 points) went a combined 8-for-32.

Napier misfired on three shots in the final minute and went just 2-for-10 in the second half.

“I’m kind of upset the way I played in the second half, the way I ran the team in the second half,” Napier said.

-- Ollie kept encouraging his team to attack the zone. But the Huskies often settled for jump shots. They missed all 12 3-point attempts in the second half after sinking 6 of 10 in the first half.

“I just wish we had better ball movement, better threes, and wish we could’ve taken it to the rack a little more and got them in foul trouble,” Ollie said. “We settled tonight, and hopefully we can learn from this.”

-- The loss ended a 54-game home winning streak against non-conference opponents. Indiana was the last non-conference team to win here, scoring a 77-73 win on Jan. 20, 2007 at the XL Center.

-- In the match-up between two former Illinois high school basketball standouts, Stanford’s Chasson Randle (Rock Island) had the clear edge over Boatright (East Aurora), scoring a game-high 22 points. The two shared the Mr. Basketball of Illinois award in 2011.

-- UConn was out-rebounded for the fifth time in six games. Stanford held a 43-41 edge.

-- The final 20 minutes easily represented UConn’s lowest scoring half of the season. The Huskies had 29 in the second half of a 59-58 win overIndianaon Nov. 2.

-- Stanford coach Johnny Dawkins on defending UConn’s potent 3-point shooting attack: “I definitely give some credit to our defense. I thought we were very active. Did they miss some open looks? Absolutely.

“But it happens… especially when you’re applying pressure and guys are active and making plays. I thought it may have sped them up a little bit in the zone and we were able to continue to just lock in defensively for entire possessions.”

The Cardinal improved to 8-2.

-- The Huskies led by as many as 13 early in the second half but couldn’t hold on. After Napier’s layup gave his team a 49-48 lead with 7:58 left, the Huskies scored just one more basket the rest of the game.

-- UConn will board a flight toSeattleThursday morning. The Huskies play at Washington on Sunday afternoon. It will be their first true road game this season.
