Norwich - A Santa suit hung on a nearby locker as Norwich Police Detective Damon Wallace made calls to arrange the delivery of gifts to needy families in the city as part of the department's "Secret Santa" program Thursday.

Officer Keven McNeill and volunteer Chaplain Gary Poorman delivered gifts to homes of children chosen by lottery from those identified to the department by the schools. Norwich Police Detective Damon Wallace, who organizes the annual gift-giving event, said families were chosen by staff at the city's elementary schools and gifts were donated anonymously by local businesses.

Any business or individual who would like to get involved in next year's event is encouraged to contact Detective Wallace at (860) 886-5561.

With one week left until Christmas, how does your holiday shopping compare to that of years past?
The holidays aren't the big to-do they used to be, but my family and friends manage to keep the holiday spirit just as much as we used to. If anything, our holidays are less gift-focused than in the past.
I've gotten accustomed to slow financial times and have been budgeting for holiday spending more effectively. I hate to disappoint family at this time of the year.
The holidays have always been stressful. I struggle every year to get all the gifts I plan to give in time.
I don't find myself being as giving to neighbors, charities and those outside of the family, but shopping for my loved ones is as generous as it has been in the past.
I'd be happy to share what my spending has been, but I haven't gotten around to shopping yet. Holiday shopping is always a last minute event for me.
