Police make arrest in prostitution, robbery scam

Groton — A man who allegedly was going to meet a prostitute in the Bailey Hill Road area was robbed early this morning by a man who was impersonating a police officer.

Police said the victim used a website to find a prostitute and make arrangements to meet. The man then went to the agreed upon location to meet the fictitious prostitute, but instead was confronted by a man posing as an officer.

The impersonator threatened to arrest the victim if he did not comply with his demands. The victim was robbed of an undisclosed amount of money. The incident happened around 5 a.m.

As a result, police arrested Caleb Harris, 20, of 191 Virgo Drive, Groton, and charged him with third-degree robbery, second-degree larceny, criminal impersonation and interfering with police.

Police said that during the course of the investigation, they stopped a vehicle whose driver also was going to meet a prostitute as part of the same scheme.

Harris also was charged with conspiracy to commit third-degree robbery, conspiracy to commit second-degree larceny, and conspiracy to commit criminal impersonation.

Harris is being held on a $100,000 bond.
