The Day's news staff looked back at the biggest local headlines of 2013:
The Thomas brothers - one a former Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Council chairman, the other the council's treasurer - each were indicted Jan. 4 on three counts of stealing from the tribe that owns Foxwoods Resort Casino. By year's end, the former chairman, Michael, was facing 18 months in prison while Steven, who resigned as treasurer before pleading guilty, was awaiting sentencing.
A jury found Michael, charged with misusing a tribal credit card while chairman, guilty on all three counts in July. In October, Steven, charged with accepting tribal-government pay for work he never did, pleaded guilty to one count of theft in exchange for dismissal of the other two counts.
Michael, scheduled to start serving an 18-month prison term on Jan. 14, filed an appeal. Steven is to be sentenced Jan. 21.
