Chimney fire quickly extinguished in Gales Ferry

Ledyard — An early morning fire damaged a home and displaced a family at 16 Pheasant Run Drive.

Gales Ferry Fire Chief Anthony Saccone said initially the call came in as a chimney fire, but the homeowner called a second time to say that the fire was extending into the home.

The fire was reported at about 8:30 a.m. and it took firefighters about 30 minutes to get it under control. Saccone said firefighters had to break the walls on the left side of the house from the basement to the attic to extinguish the fire and ensure there were not remaining “hot spots”.

He said three people were in the home and would be displaced since power had to be secured. The American Red Cross was called in to assist the family with their housing  and emergency needs.

There are no hydrants in the area so tanker trucks had to be called in. Firefighters placed ladders in the front and the rear of the house near the chimney to check for fire extension.

In addition to Gales Ferry, Ledyard, Center Groton and the Naval Submarine FAST team responded to the fire. The Laurel Hill Fire Department in Norwich covered Gales Ferry’s headquarters.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

I am not a gun owner and I will sleep better knowing that we are doing more to keep track of gun ownership in our state.

I am not a gun owner but I feel that these registration requirements and bans infringe upon the Second Amendment rights of those who wish to own weapons.

As a gun owner, I support these registrations and bans. Irresponsible gun owners give a bad name to the rest of us who exercise our Second Amendment rights responsibly. Guns are only as safe as the people who own them.

As a gun owner, I will be registering my weapons. Whether I agree with the reasoning behind it or not, the threat of a minimum of one year in prison for violations is enough incentive for me to comply.

As a gun owner, I feel these mandatory registrations and the bans infringe upon my rights. I am a responsible citizen and I will be exercising my Second Amendment rights by refusing to comply with these mandates.
