Lillias Marshall Paul, 90, of Essex, died Dec. 20 in Chester. She was born Dec. 28, 1922 in Manchester to the late Alexander Marshall and Martha (Langer) Marshall. Lil moved to New Hampshire at an early age and lived there throughout high school. She attended Pembroke Academy. Lil moved back to Connecticut in 1940 and married Justus Williams Paul, Jr., on Sept. 13, 1947.
In addition to a very active family life, Lil worked at various banks and in property management and real estate accounting. She and her family moved from Manchester to Essex in 1958, and she continued to be active in various community organizations including Child and Family Services. Lil was also a trustee of The First Congregational Church of Essex, a Republican registrar of voters for Ivoryton, and a Justice of the Peace. She was a member of the Essex Yacht Club and Mile Creek Beach Club.
Lil will be remembered for her engaging manner, sharp wit, and outgoing personality. She enjoyed bridge, gardening, reading, gourmet cooking and was an accomplished knitter who made hundreds of original design sweaters for her family and friends. For decades, Lil carried on her Essex morning coffee tradition, making many friends and enjoying much laughter along the way. Her sense of humor and willingness to help out with any task will be missed by all.
She is survived by six children, Gregory, Carolyn, Douglas, Kimberly, Geoffrey, and Elizabeth; 12 grandchildren; and sisters Louise Stokes and Helena Skaggs. In addition to her husband, who predeceased her in 2008, she was predeceased by a brother who died in infancy.
