The Huskies' volleyball squad made Morgan proud, winning not only the Shoreline title for the 22nd straight year, but taking home the Class S title, while the football team boasted one of its most successful campaigns in years.
The Huskies finished 26-0, won the Shoreline Conference title for the 22nd straight year, and claimed the biggest piece of the pie: the Class S title, something Morgan won for the first time since 2005.
Morgan was led by three captains in senior Sarah Dahlberg, senior Lily Dawson, and junior Jen Dawson. Dahlberg suffered a torn ACL in the second match of the year, and Lily Dawson was the Huskies' setter and engine, earning a spot in the Senior All-Star Game, while also being named Shoreline Player of the Year, First Team All-Shoreline, and First Team All-State. Jen Dawson manned the outside hitter position and was named Most Valuable Player of the state final match and earned First Team All-Shoreline, First Team All-State, and New Haven Register All-Area.
Other contributing seniors were Ciera Harris (OPP), Angel Buffington (DS), and Kelsy Orsini, who suffered from an injured wrist midway through the season, but like Dahlberg, provided support from the sidelines.
Junior libero Ashlyn Chidsey proved a solid player for the Huskies and earned Second Team All-Shoreline; sophomore middle hitter Sami Ashton earned Honorable Mention All-Shoreline, and junior outside hitter Kait Anderson also earned Honorable Mention All-Shoreline.
Finishing with a 10-2 record-their only regular season loss coming at the hands of division champion Valley Regional followed by a loss in the Class S State Playoff quarterfinal to Woodland-the Huskies went from a one-win squad just two years ago to winning 10.
Coach Mike Eagle was assisted by Tom Drew, Chris Ward, Kyle Murphy, Marvin Meyer, Jake Luchuk, Sal Fiorillo, and Mike Aresinowicz, along with general manager Mike Eagle, Sr.
Leading the pack were senior captains Riley Cronan (OL/DL), Mark Zumpano (WR/DB), and Alex Lipka (QB, Offensive MVP), along with junior captains Jake Ward (RB/SS, Team Most Valuable Player for the second year in a row, All-Pequot) and Greg Lee (OL/LB, Defensive MVP, All-Pequot).
The Huskies also saw solid play from seniors Steven Jara-Torres, Wagner Guiterrez (Coaches' Award), and Jake Mastroianni, along with juniors Eric Peterson (All-Pequot), Jake Tuener (All-Pequot), Joe Lee (All-Pequot), and Jace Garcia (All-Pequot); sophomore Chucky Kostek (OL), and 14 freshmen that came from nearly no background to very little experience as Clinton does not have an 8th grade program.
The Huskies finished 4-12 on the season and bid farewell to nine seniors, including captain Patrick McAllister, Matt Granfield, Bobby Gendron, Alex Best, Alex Eimutus, Matt McNamara, Ryan Caprio, Casey Sullivan, and Avery Hecimovich. The team's leading scorer was Chase LeMay (4 goals this year) and the leading assister was Kevin Pujos (4 assists).
For the Morgan girls' soccer team, 2013 was considered a successful season as the Huskies finished 6-9-1 and met their primary goal of making the Class S State Tournament.
Leading Morgan this fall were captains Ciarra Vanderveen and Kelsey Donaldson. Vanderveen, a senior central defender, and Donaldson, a junior goalkeeper played large roles. Donaldson was awarded team MVP and Honorable Mention All-Shoreline as well.
Other seniors included forward Liz Bradley, forward Sarah Cockley, forward Gabby Holveck, and defender Sarah Spotts.
Part of Morgan's success story this year was the ample amount of talented underclassmen the squad had, including that of Second Team All-Shoreline player and sophomore Josie Sullivan and Honorable Mention All-Shoreline player Nola Neri.
Though it was hard for the Morgan field hockey squad to win games this fall, the Huskies pushed through the tough times and showed heart and dedication, evident by their 1-0 overtime victory versus Valley Regional on Oct. 21-their first and only win of the 2013 season.
Coached by Melissa Fritze and Assistant Coach Anne Simonsen, Morgan was led by captains Kelly Thompson (Honorable Mention All-Shoreline) and Charlotte Limosani. Also contributing were Rory Smith (MVP, Second Team All-Shoreline), Lele Nguyen (Second Team All-Shoreline, Best Defensive Player), Kaitlyn Conway (Coaches' Award), Francesca Moran (Best Offensive Player), goalkeeper Kate Eveland (Best Defensive Player), Isabella Pitarra (Most Improved Player), and Jamie Fitzgerald (Coaches' Award).
Boys' Cross Country
The Morgan boys' cross country squad was led by senior captain Justin Santamaria and fellow seniors Matt Egan, Miraj Keshwala, Paul Michael Mulally, and Sean O'Rourke and finished 12th in Class SS.
Girls' Cross Country
Huskies' girls' cross country finished 22nd in Class SS and ran without any seniors, but juniors Jenna Egan, Angelina Taylor, and Tasha Walker represented Morgan's small squad, along with sophomores Caitlin Goss, Alexandra Jones, Kasey Waterbury, and Hannah Zirkelbach.
