UPDATED: New Haven woman killed in I-95 crash in Old Lyme

Old Lyme – A 58-year-old New Haven woman who was a passenger in a broken down car on Interstate 95 was killed this morning after it was struck by a rented box truck, state police said. Nidia Vargas was pronounced dead at the scene of the 11:28 a.m. crash which involved four vehicles. State police at Troop F in Westbrook had received reports of a disabled car on the southbound side of the Baldwin Bridge and moments later that the car had been struck by a box truck. State police determined Vargas was a passenger in a 1995 Acura Integra driven by Evelyn Rivera, 34, of New Haven. The Acura was hit on the passenger side by a Ryder rental truck driven by 23-year-old Dean Cambio of Warwick, R.I. After striking the Acura, police said the box truck hit a Ford Edge. The Acura was struck again by a Cadillac Seville. Rivera was taken by Old Lyme Ambulance to Yale New Haven Hospital. Cambio was taken to the Shoreline Clinic. Both were treated and released, police said. The drivers of the other two cars were not injured. The crash partially shut down the highway for several hours. Police said their investigation is continuing.
