Registrations due Dec. 31 for weapons, ammunition

The registration deadlines for two mandates of the state's new gun law, related to the possession of assault-style weapons and large capacity magazines, are fast approaching.

An assault weapon certificate must be applied for by Dec. 31, 2013. The list of banned weapons and the application form (DPS-414C) is available at the Connecticut state police website at www.ct.gov/despp. The form must be accompanied by proof of purchase or a notarized affidavit attesting to the date the weapon was purchased prior to the law taking effect. The form will be processed and returned to the applicant with a certificate number.

Large-capacity magazines must also be declared by Dec. 31. The application form (DESPP-788C) is also available at the state police website. The form must be accompanied by proof of purchase or a notarized affidavit attesting to the date the magazine was purchased prior to the law taking effect. There is no return notification on this form. It is suggested that application be made in person or the form sent by registered mail.

Both forms must be received or postmarked by Dec. 31 or they will be returned to the applicant unprocessed. For clarification of these requirements, call the State Police Special Licensing and Firearms Unit at (860) 685-8290.
