UConn basketball news on Brimah, Napier, AAC, etc.

Some UConn basketball news to pass along:

-- Freshman center Amida Brimah earned his first American Athletic Conference rookie of the week honor after his break-out performance in Saturday’s 84-61 rout of Central Florida.

Brimah showed off his developing offensive skills while scoring a career-best 20 points in 20 minutes off the bench. He also had a career-high eight rebounds and five blocks.

Senior Shabazz Napier was named to the AAC honor roll for the fifth time this season. He averaged 16 points, 7.5 assists, 6.0 rebounds and 3.5 steals in wins over UCF and Harvard.

-- UConn (13-3, 1-2) has a big week ahead, facing two of the top three teams in the conference. The Huskies visit No. 17 Memphis (12-3, 3-1) on Thursday and host No. 18 Louisville (14-3, 3-1) on Saturday at Gampel Pavilion.

This is a great chance for UConn to make a statement.

No. 19 Cincinnati (15-2, 4-0) resides in first place in the conference. The Bearcats host last-place Temple(5-9, 0-4) on Tuesday.

-- Memphis sophomore forward Shaq Goodwin received AAC player of the week honors after averaging 19 points and 9.5 rebounds in road wins at Louisville and Temple. He’s averaging 13.2 points and a team-high 7.1 rebounds this season.

-- The Huskies failed to crack the Associated Press top 25 poll. They were third in the receiving votes category with 35.

-- UConn ranks first in the conference in free throw shooting (76.4 percent) and blocked shots (7.2). They also are third in the country in blocks. Napier is first in assists at 6.0.

-- Napier’s game-winning shot against Florida on Dec. 2 has been nominated for GEICO play of the year.
