The Waterford man who was shot by a state trooper following a car chase Saturday was on parole for burglary and is likely to face additional new charges related to his attempt to flee from police.

State police said Keith A. Corey, 44, of 25 Clifton St. fled when a trooper attempted to stop him as he drove on Route 12 in Plainfield at about 8:10 p.m. He drove south along Interstate 395, with troopers in pursuit, then rammed several cruisers after troopers surrounded his car near Exit 83 and ordered him to get out, police said. Corey drove back and forth, state police said, striking cruisers in his attempt to get away. A trooper who was on foot fired at the car as it approached him, according to the state police.

Corey, who was released from prison in 2009 after serving more than four years for burglaries in Bozrah and in the Danielson area, was being electronically monitored by parole officers and was wearing an ankle bracelet. He was treated at and released from The William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich following the shooting. He is being held on parole violation charges at the Corrigan-Radgowski Correctional Institution in Montville.

New London State’s Attorney Michael L. Regan said his office and state police are investigating.

At his 2005 sentencing in New London Superior Court, Corey told a judge he had been doing “robberies” for the past 15 to 20 years to support a drug habit. He said he was “trying to take care of it.”

Corey was one of three men who broke into a Bozrah Street residence in 2002, stealing a floor safe, a television set and an antique bicycle. Police said the safe alone contained $70,000 in cash and jewelry valued at $22,000.

The trooper involved in Saturday’s shooting has not been identified. He was treated for a minor injury at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London.
