At a precise point in each show of his current Magna Carta World Tour, rap/everything mogul Jay Z, reflecting on his catalog of hit songs, offhandedly tells the crowd, "I got a million of these."
OK, so maybe the remark isn't offhand as much as Jay Z wants it to seem that way. But considering the dude's Midas touch, it's probably best not to question any aspect of his blueprint(s) for success.
Midway through his performance Friday in the Mohegan Sun Arena, then, it's probable that Hova will lean forward with a casual smile and tell the sold-out hall that, yes, he's got a million of these. And it will seem like he does. He's also got 14 Grammy nominations for his latest CD, "Magna Carta ... Holy Grail" - more than any other artist this year.
It's also pleasing that, in Rootsian fashion, Jay Z will be backed by a live four-piece band - including keyboardist/producer Timbaland. Live is always better than not live.
