Youth wrestling tourney to benefit UConn

New London - The UConn Wrestling Club, in conjunction with U.S. Amateur Wrestling of Connecticut, will host its fifth annual Husky Howl youth wrestling tournament on Sunday, Feb. 9, at New London High School.

The event, which begins at 7:45 a.m. and features the following divisions - Mighty mites (ages 5-6), Bantam (ages 7-8), Intermediate (9-10), Novice (11-12) and Middle School - is held to raise funds and help re-establish college wrestling at UConn and throughout the state. The Husky Howl has raised more than $40,000 to date and resulted in the purchase of a new wrestling mat for the UConn club team.

Collegiate wrestling, which once boasted as many as nine programs throughout the state, is down to only four - Division I Sacred Heart in Fairfield and three Division III programs with Coast Guard, Trinity and Wesleyan.
