Mystic - The Stonington Planning and Zoning Commission will hold two public hearings at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Mystic Middle School on a controversial plan to build a West Marine store on land currently owned by Mystic Aquarium at the intersection of Coogan and Maritime drives.
The aquarium uses the property for overflow parking during the busy tourist season, and the commission has expressed concern about losing that parking. So in order to replace the lost spots, the aquarium is seeking a separate approval to use another lot it owns on Maritime Drive for overflow parking.
In his report for the commission, Town Planner Keith Brynes said that failure to approve the application by Sea Research Foundation and developer Waterstone Retail for the new parking lot while approving the construction of the store may not violate the town's parking requirements for the aquarium, it "would lead to considerable impacts come the tourist season."
