Plainfield – Plainfield police on Tuesday charged a Killingly man in connection with the hit-and-run death of a 59-year-old man struck while crossing the road near his home in Plainfield last year.

Nathan A. Carcieri, 29, was taken into custody Tuesday morning with assistance from Waterford police at a job site in Waterford, police said in a statement.

Carcieri is charged with negligent homicide with a motor vehicle, felony evading responsibility and driving an unregistered motor vehicle.

The charges stem from a June 10 incident in which Robert E. Johnson was struck by a vehicle on School Street in the Central Village section of Plainfield. Police said the incident was reported at 11:20 p.m. and witnesses reported seeing a vehicle striking Johnson as he was attempting to cross the road.

“The operator of the vehicle failed to render assistance and fled the scene,” police said in a statement.

Johnson subsequently died from his injuries.

Police had found and seized the 1997 Isuzu Trooper involved in the hit-and-run at a residence in Rhode Island several days after Johnson’s death.

Held in lieu of a $100,000 bond, Carcieri is due to appear Wednesday in Danielson Superior Court.
