New London - Sophomore heavyweight Kevin Painten won 3-1 in overtime as Coast Guard Academy rallied for a 17-16 wrestling victory over WPI on Sunday and completing a sweep of a tri-match.
The Bears (6-9) also defeated Bridgewater State 40-8.
Coast Guard trailed WPI 13-6 before senior Luke Taylor won 16-1 at 174 pounds to close the gap to 13-11. WPI won the next match to go up 16-11, but freshman Phillip Azzari rallied for a 4-3 decision at 197 to make it 16-14, setting the stage for Painten's dramatic OT win.
Taylor also had a pin in the win over Bridgewater as did Mike Giorgio (141), Michael Palombo (157) and Marc Wagner (184).
Yuta Watanabe scored 22 points and Eric Paschall 21 to lead St. Thomas More past Northfield Mount Hermon 86-82. The two teams play again today at St. Thomas More at 4:30 p.m. Cane Broome added 14 points and seven assists for the Chancellors (21-4).
Sophomores Mark Guentert and Weston Fortna won at No. 1 doubles for Coast Guard, but the Bears lost to Vassar, 8-1. Coast Guard is 1-3.
H.S. boys' basketball
• East Hampton outscored Old Lyme 25-9 in the fourth quarter and rallied for a 69-55 win over the Wildcats in the Shoreline Conference. Josh Turkowski scored 19 points for Old Lyme (6-10) and Matt St. Germain-Watts added 12 on four 3-pointers.
NFA/St. Bernard/Bacon scored five goals in the second period to defeat Rocky Hill/Middletown/RHAM, 6-3, on Saturday night. Lorgan Morin had two goals and an assist for the Saints while Tyler Faulkner added one goal and two assists.
