Samuel Smith House approved as historic property

East Lyme — The Samuel Smith House on 82 Plants Dam Road will become a historic property in town.

The 17th century farmhouse will be designated as such under town ordinance, following approval from the Board of Selectmen on Wednesday, said Luane Lange, the chairwoman of the Historic Properties Commission. The designation will become official within 10 days of the town’s filing with the state, which the town is expected to do on Thursday, she said.

The town had approved purchasing the historic house, also known as the “Hurlbut House” in 2012. The Friends of the Samuel Smith House, a local group, has been working on several initiatives to restore the house and turn it into an educational center for the community.
