Yacht cruise offered at fundraiser by Stonington education supporters

Stonington - A chance to bid on a cruise aboard a luxury yacht that has hosted guests such as Spencer Tracy, Sir Laurence Olivier, Fred Astaire, Katharine Hepburn and Shirley Temple highlights the Stonington Education Fund annual education celebration on Friday from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. at the Mystic Aquarium.

Admission is $65 per person and includes a buffet dinner, silent auction, live music and a cash bar. More information is at www.stoningtoneducationfund.net.

Proceeds from the event help the nonprofit foundation offer grants to teachers in the school system to pay for innovative programs and equipment not funded through the school budget each year. Because the aquarium donates the use of its facility and Blue Ocean Catering donates the buffet, nearly 100 percent of the ticket price goes to fund grants.

Among the items in the silent auction is a cruise for 10-12 people with appetizers and drinks aboard the 74-foot luxury motor yacht Aphrodite, out of Watch Hill. The boat is owned by mutual fund company owner Chuck Royce, who also restored the Ocean House hotel.
