New LondonFirefighter Alfred Mayo, arrested in connection with a June fight and suspended from his job, returned to work Feb. 13 after accepting a 45-day suspension without pay as part of an agreement with the city.

Mayo’s return came after he pleaded no contest to reduced charges related to a fight outside the Polish Club in Montville. Prosecutors admitted there was disagreement about who started the fight.

Mayo, initially charged with third-degree assault, pleaded no contest to second-degree breach of peace. He received a suspended six-month prison term followed by one year of conditional discharge. He will pay $3,000 to the victim for medical expenses.

Mayo and his union agreed not to file a grievance. The city will pay his back salary, minus unemployment benefits he received.
