State Rep. Marilyn Giuliano, R-23rd District, said Thursday that she will retire from the district covering Old Lyme, Lyme, Old Saybrook and part of Westbrook, after six terms in the legislature.

Giuliano, a Lyme-Old Lyme school psychologist, will not seek another term as state representative this fall. She currently serves on the Education, Appropriations and Program Review and Investigations committees. Recently, she introduced a bill to pause the implementation of the Common Core State Standards until local stakeholders could weigh in on the new academic benchmarks.

“Serving as a legislator for six terms is an experience I never dreamed I would have,” said Giuliano in a written statement. “As I shift gears in life, I will always be grateful for the opportunity to meet and interact with the good people of the 23rd district.”

Two Republicans Vicki Lanier of Old Lyme and Devin Carney of Old Saybrook said on Thursday they are seeking Giuliano’s seat.

Lanier, a former treasurer on the Lyme-Old Lyme Board of Education, is a lawyer who serves on the Old Lyme Republican Town Committee. Lanier was born in Old Lyme and five generations of her mother’s family also lived in town.

She said in a news release on Thursday that she wants to run “ensure that everyone in our district has the same opportunities to achieve their own goals.” Her priorities include reducing unnecessary taxation and regulation, returning autonomy to local Boards of Education and supporting the interests of seniors and retirees.

“I am excited and honored for the opportunity to effectively represent all the people of the 23rd district,” said Lanier in a statement. “My professional accomplishments and first-hand experience in realizing goals through hard work and perseverance will help me serve my fellow citizens with the right balance of practical experience and good legislative judgment.”

Carney, a 29-year-old Coldwell Banker Realtor who also runs a voice-over business, said in a phone interview on Thursday that he is running for state representative. He said he has witnessed many people his age leave the state after they couldn’t find jobs or buy a home in Connecticut.

Carney, an Old Saybrook native and the grandson of actor Art Carney, said he wants to collaborate with a team in Hartford so new generations can reinvest in the state’s economy.

“There’s a lot of work to be done to make this state affordable and prosperous for this generation and hopefully other generations,” he said.
