Day's defense of rights should include guns

Your editorial, "Gun owners must obey registration law," (Feb. 20), was very disturbing. The acts of the Connecticut legislature have created a crime and, as you mentioned, as many as 100,000 innocent people may have become felons without their knowledge. No one in this country should become an instant felon by the passing of a law. This law was an emotional response to the actions of a mentally disturbed individual who was ignored, then murdered innocent children and teachers in Sandy Hook Elementary School. Ironically, this oppressive law, which was directed at law abiding citizens, would not prevent the same thing from happening again tomorrow.

It is important to know that in 1933 Germany, Adolf Hitler seized power and used gun records to identify, disarm, and attack political opponents and Jews. Constitutional rights were suspended and mass searches and seizures of guns followed. Police revoked gun licenses of Social Democrats and others who were not "politically reliable."

If The Day wants to be the "defender of the peoples rights," why don't you promote repeal and replacement of this law with one that will actually protect our children?
