UConn’s Smallwood to speak at New London football banquet
UConn's Yawin Smallwood, a two-time all-conference linebacker who is expected to be a mid-round pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, will be the guest speaker at the annual New London High School football banquet and Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Sunday, March 9, at 1 p.m.
Smallwood was a first-team selection to the All-Big East team as a sophomore in 2012 and a first-team choice on the inaugural All-American Athletic Conference team last season, when he decided to leave school a year early and make himself eligible for the draft. He recently competed in the NFL Combine in Indianapolis.
New London, in addition to inducting six new members into its Football Hall of Fame, will honor the 1983 state championship team - the first in program history - which celebrated its 30th anniversary last season. The Class of 2014 inductees included Joseph Bignoria (1952), Joseph Kelly (1954), Joseph DiMaggio (1954), Charles Ashburn Jr. (1961), Larry Pemberton (1973) and Frank Marcille (1993).
