John Conroy skates on Mill Pond in Guilford last week. Conroy was only on the ice for a few minutes, because although the prolonged cold weather meant the ice was thick, it was also patterned with bumps, ripples, and patches of frosty snow, making the surface tricky to skate. Conroy, a lifelong skater, recalled being on the ice with his
83 year-old father. Conroy instilled the love of skating and hockey into his sons, two of whom still play the sport, including his 52 year-old son, who plays twice a week in a league in Florida.
