Crystal Procaccini and her husband, Ben Pelletier, are both teachers at Polson Middle School. Crystal teaches 7th grade English and Ben teaches 8th grade social studies, and they are seeking donations for a worthy cause.
From Procaccini: In 2006, I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis, a form of Irritable Bowel Disease. Basically, I had open ulcers in my large intestine that caused a whole bunch of problems. I suffered with this disease for seven years, trying medication after medication. I spent a few years going for monthly infusions and giving myself injections, but nothing worked. I spent a lot of time on high doses of steroid medications, and those came with a set of their own problems like a Pulmonary Embolism and Shingles. In the summer of 2013, I finally had enough and made the decision to have the first of three surgeries and have my colon removed.
In November of 2011, I married the most amazing man ever, Ben. He has been by my side for years helping me deal with all of these health issues. I don’t know how I would have been able to get through it all without him. It’s been over a year since we have been married, and we are ready to start a family. However, because of my health issues, I would be considered a high risk pregnancy, and I have continued to have other health problems that have prevented us from trying to start a family. These health issues have caused me to need my second surgery much sooner than originally planned and once this and the last surgeries have been completed, doctors have advised against having any children of our own because it could complicate things further.
Ben and I have always wanted to adopt, but with this new information about my health, it has become our only option. Adoption is known as being a pricey adventure, but we were unprepared for just how costly it could be. Adopting a baby ranges from $20,000 to $30,000, an amount that is almost impossible to pay living on two teacher’s salaries. Ben and I are both teachers in the Madison Public Schools, and we are reaching out to this wonderful community to help us bring a child into our home. We have set up a donation website and have already risen over $2,000. We are truly humbled by how many people love us enough to help in any way they can. Our hearts are full with love and gratitude to all of our family, friends, and even strangers who have donated to our cause. But, $2,000 is a far cry from $30,000. So, we are reaching out to the community that we work in and have been a part of for the past several years. Any donation is appreciated and not too small. Please help us give a beautiful child a loving home.
