Groton man turns himself in to face charges in pedestrian's death

Danielson - A Groton man turned himself in to state police on Wednesday to face charges in connection with an accident last year in the parking lot of a Stop & Shop in Putnam that resulted in an elderly pedestrian’s death.

Michael Gagne, 37, of 97 Butternut Road in Groton was charged by warrant with negligent homicide with a motor vehicle and unsafe movement. By state statute, negligent homicide with a motor vehicle is considered a motor vehicle offense and with a conviction carries a maximum sentence of six month in prison.

On the afternoon of March 21, 2013, state police said Gagne was the driver of a Dunbar armored vehicle that struck 88-year-old Ellsworth Sheldon of Thompson in the parking lot of the Stop & Shop off Route 44 in Putnam. Sheldon later died of his injuries.

After turning himself in on Wednesday Gagne was processed and released on a promise to appear. He is due to appear March 26 in Danielson Superior Court.
