Buonocore elected to National Hall of Fame by NHSACA

Legendary New London High School football coach Jim Buonocore has been elected to the National High School Athletic Coaches Association National Hall of Fame.

Buonocore, who retired in 1998 following a 30-year career at New London, will be inducted during the 2014 National Hall of Fame Ceremony on Tuesday, June 17, at the Snow King Resort in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Buonocore was nominated by the Connecticut High School Coaches Association and his selection, according to NHSACA executive director Dave Dougherty, was based on longevity, service to high school athletics, honors and other specific state criteria.

Buonocore had a career record of 209-94-8 from 1969-98 and guided the Whalers to seven state title appearances and four state championships (1983, 1989, 1991 and 1992). New London's 1991 team finished 12-0 and was ranked No. 1 in the New Haven Register state poll. His teams won four Merit Awards for outstanding achievement (equivalent to state championships before the playoffs began in 1976), he received numerous Coach of the Year awards and he was inducted into the CHSCA Hall of Fame in 2003.
