Waterford - The threat of inclement weather has forced Waterford Speedbowl management to postpone its Blastoff Weekend.
The season-opening event, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, has been pushed back to April 12-13. The Speedbowl will still have an open practice session today (pit games open at 10 a.m. and practice starts at noon) and the Speedbowl will officially begin its 64th season on Saturday, April 5, with the first of its weekly NASCAR Whelen All-American Saturday Night Series at 7 p.m. (qualifying starts at 5:30).
"We regret having to move Blastoff Weekend," track owner and promoter Terry Eames said in a statement released Thursday night. "We were prepared to open the race season this weekend, however it appears Mother Nature just does not want to cooperate. ... We still plan to have a really great event for race fans, just a couple weeks later."
The Blastoff Weekend will start feature the Valenti Modified Racing Series, Northeastern Midget Association and the track's NASCAR Whelen All-American Series racing divisions along with many more.
As for today's practice sessiion, pit area admission is $30, although grandstands will be closed.
"We're hoping to get some cars on the track along with conducting inspections and giving competitors a chance to complete pre-season registration paperwork," Eames said. "The more laps competitors can log early in the year, the better it is for everyone."
