A snowy winter that caused a handful of school cancellations has pushed graduation back to late June for some local school districts.
Here's a district-by-district look at graduation dates:
East Lyme High School
The last day of school was originally set for June 11 but was moved tentatively to June 19 after five snow days this year. If there are more school cancellations, the days may be added to the end of the year. The Board of Education will set the graduation date at its April 7 meeting. Graduation last year was June 20.
Groton Public Schools
The last day of school will be June 18, followed by the Fitch High School graduation on June 20. The school calendar had eight days built in at the start of the year in case of snow, Superintendent Michael Graner said. Groton has used six of the eight snow days so far. Graner said he hopes winter is over, "But we've had snow in April. I don't want to jinx that." Graduation last year was June 21.
Ledyard High School
Though the last day of school has been pushed back from June 11 to June 20 because of the district's snow days this year, the June 21 graduation date will not change. Graduation was held last year on June 22.
The last day of school has been moved tentatively to June 20 because of seven snow cancellations, but that could change with additional closures. The Board of Education will set the graduation date at its April 2 meeting. Graduation last year was June 21.
Montville High School
Montville will set the graduation date at its April school board meeting, but graduation is usually held on the last day of school. This year, that's expected to be June 19. That would be earlier than last year, when the last day of school and graduation were June 20.
New London High School
The school system has not yet set a date for graduation. The date will be determined in April, according to Chief Academic Officer Kate Ericson. Because of the five snow days the district logged this winter, the last day of school is scheduled for June 10. Last year's graduation was June 21, and district officials expect this year's graduation to be around the same date. One additional factor in scheduling the New London High School graduation is the availability of the facilities at the Coast Guard Academy, which the district prefers to use for its graduation ceremony.
Superintendent Peter Nero said the date for Wheeler High School graduation will be set officially in April after winter weather has subsided.
The district has had six snow days so far this school year, pushing back the tentative graduation date, and the last day of school, from June 13 to June 19. Graduation last year was held June 19.
Norwich Free Academy
For the second consecutive year, Norwich Free Academy has been forced to reschedule graduation after having eight snow days this school year. The original graduation date was June 13, and the new date is June 20.
The last day of (regular) school at St. Bernard is May 30, which is also the graduation date. Students will have final exams June 2-5. On June 6, some students will have make-up exams. A school official said the snow did not influence these dates.
Stonington High School
Graduation was scheduled for June 12, but has been tentatively set for June 19 because of five snow days. The date could change if there are additional snow days.
Waterford High School
A date for graduation has not been scheduled. The district does not set "hard and fast" graduation dates, according to Joyce Cumming, assistant to the superintendent. Cumming said the Board of Education may discuss this year's graduation date at the board's April meeting. She said she does not anticipate a graduation date later than last year's, which was June 25. Graduation was relatively late last year due to school cancellations during storms last fall. This year, the district has seen six snow days, delaying the last day of school from June 10 to June 18.
The Williams School's graduation takes place on June 4 at 3 p.m. at Palmer Auditorium at Connecticut College.
