Westerly — Police are investigating a shooting Tuesday in the area of Pleasant Street, though they have yet to find victims.
The sound of shots fired was first reported to police at 4:20 p.m., and responding officers spoke to witnesses who reported hearing what they described as “loud bangs” in the area of Pleasant Street, west of Marriot Avenue, according to a statement from Westerly Police Chief Edward W. St. Clair.
Witnesses reported that a dark colored Nissan or Honda-type vehicle sped from the area just after they heard the shots, police said. Witnesses also reported seeing two young men walking away from the area, in the opposite direction as the suspect vehicle, police said.
St. Clair said detectives and patrol officers checked the area and found several shell casings in the roadway on Pleasant Street. Police also determined that two parked vehicles and a nearby building, home to a commercial business, were struck by bullets.
Investigators do not believe that the building or the vehicles were intentional targets. There were no reported injuries.
Anyone with information regarding the shooting is asked to call the Westerly Police Department at (401) 596-2022 or the Westerly Police tip line at (401) 348-6131.
