2 arrested in child's death in Putnam

Putnam (AP) — The father and stepmother of a 2½-year-old boy who died in Putnam last week are facing cruelty and reckless endangerment charges.

Connecticut State Police said Thursday that 30-year-old David Mahan and 32-year-old Renee Peterson of Putnam were arrested Wednesday. Details of the charges weren't released.

Putnam police say Peterson called 911 on the morning of March 26 to report that the boy was unresponsive and not breathing. The dispatcher gave Peterson instructions on how to perform CPR, but the boy was pronounced dead at Day Kimball Hospital.

Peterson was arrested in Putnam. Mahan was arrested in Douglas, Mass., and will be extradited back to Connecticut.

It's not clear if the couple have lawyers. Peterson was held on $25,000 bail and was to be arraigned Thursday in Danielson Superior Court.
