Millstone Unit 2 shut down

Waterford – Unit 2 at the Millstone Power Station has been shut down since Saturday evening for a scheduled refueling, spokesman Ken Holt said today.

Every 18 months, about one-third of the nuclear fuel rods that power the plant are taken out and replaced, a process that will last about a month, Holt said.

“We’ll do a lot of maintenance during this time,” he said. “We’ve brought in about 1,000 supplemental personal because of the amount of work we’ll be doing.”

Unit 2, the older and smaller of the two operating reactors at the site, was built in 1975 and generates about 880 megawatts of electricity.
