Waterford - Firefighters extinguished a blaze on Thursday that tore through a detached garage and threatened to engulf a series of outbuildings at 19 Lamphere Road.

The fire was reported by neighbors at about 2:30 p.m. Firefighters arrived to find flames shooting from one part of a two-bay garage attached to several other structures. Several trees outside the garage lit up like torches.

Crews from Cohanzie, Jordan, Oswegatchie and Goshen departments all responded, dousing the garage in water from the inside and out. It took about 15 minutes before it was under control, according to Goshen firefighter Monte Fielder. Fielder said a vehicle and other items inside the garage were damaged by the fire. The house and a large RV parked in the driveway escaped harm, however.

No one was home at the time and no injuries were reported. New London’s firefighter assistance team also responded.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the fire marshal’s office.
