Motorcyclist, 25, killed on Route 214 in Ledyard

Ledyard — A motorcyclist was killed Saturday in an accident on Route 214, according to Ledyard Fire Chief John R. Doucette.

Kyle Startz, 25, of Groton sustained fatal injuries in the accident, which was reported in the area of 40 Stoddards Wharf Road (Route 214), near Goulart Road, at 5:35 p.m., according to Ledyard police. An initial investigation determined that Startz was riding his motorcycle westbound on Route 214 when he lost control and hit two separate eastbound vehicles, police said.

Emergency personnel initially requested a Life Star helicopter due to the nature and extent of the motorcyclist's injuries but later canceled it, Doucette said. No other injuries were reported.

Route 214 remained closed between Route 117 and Whalehead Road for much of Saturday evening. The accident remains under investigation by accident reconstructionists from the Ledyard Police Department and troopers with the Connecticut State Police CARS unit, according to Ledyard police.

Ledyard and Gales Ferry fire companies, Ledyard Ambulance, American Ambulance paramedics and the Ledyard Volunteer Emergency Squad all responded.
