I was pleased to see your editorial, "Locally grown grows," (April 10), supporting local farmers and their retail outlets. We all benefit when the distance between grower and consumer is as small as possible.
The Noank Community Market, a member-owned cooperative in Noank Village, was founded two years ago on the concept that bringing local foods and other products to our community and surrounding areas makes healthy eating easier and more convenient, and supports local purveyors. Shoppers can find local dairy products, eggs, produce, herbs, honey, gifts, and even books by local authors. And like the Niantic Farmers Market, the Noank Market fosters a sense of community with space for sitting and chatting over coffee and sandwiches, and with regular events like the "Taste of Noank" celebrations.
The increase in Connecticut farms is good news both for our economy and for our health. Noank Market salutes farmers for their courage in starting new enterprises, and state officials for providing grants to promote buying local.
