New London - The police chief is being treated for injuries suffered when she was hit in the head by a window during Hurricane Sandy.

Police Chief Margaret Ackley put an ice pack on her head and continued to work during the Oct. 29 storm and for several days after, according to Mayor Daryl Justin Finizio. The storm blew over trees, knocked out power and sent a storm surge across Pequot Avenue that flooded basements and took out a private beach pavilion.

"She has taken appropriate steps to seek medical attention for it. She's not off duty, but I can't comment any further than that without talking to the city attorney or talking to the chief,'' Finizio said Wednesday.

Ackley did not respond to an email seeking comment.

Ackley was in the city's emergency management center at fire headquarters on Bank Street during the storm when the wind blew a window into the station, hitting her in the head. The glass did not break, Finizio said, and public works crews nailed the window back in place.

At the time, city officials said the chief remained at her post despite the bump on the head.

"She's tough as nails; she's a real trouper,'' Finizio said Wednesday. "The next day, she and I went to the field. ... She was clearly in command, doing a great job out there. She was injured, but she did her job."
