Stonington Borough to vote Saturday on proposed $1 million budget

Stonington - The proposed $1,030,871 borough budget for 2014-15, which calls for no tax increase, will be voted on by residents Saturday at the annual borough meeting which begins at 10 a.m. in Borough Hall.

Warden Jeff Callahan said the budget will not increase the tax rate of .25 mills. He said the budget includes approximately $10,000 that would be used for the first time to pay a small per call stipend to volunteer firefighters as a way to increase participation in the department. He said that if the budget passes with the $10,000 intact, the borough will create a system to disperse the money. The budget also calls for paying the newly appointed fire captain $1,800 and two lieutenants $1,200 each because of increased responsibilities following the merger of the fire companies.

The budget also calls for adding $100,000 to the truck fund which is needed for the upcoming purchase of new firetruck and $60,000 to the building fund, half of which is needed to replace the boiler at Borough Hall.
