New London — Robert C. Olsen Jr., a retired Coast Guard rear admiral, will be the graduation speaker at Mitchell College’s 70th commencement ceremony scheduled for May 17.
An alumnus and trustee of Mitchell College, Olsen, who is known as “Rube,” most recently served as the president of Webb Institute in Glen Cove, N.Y., from 2005 to 2013. Olsen, who spent 36 years in the Coast Guard and served as the superintendent of the Coast Guard Academy for his last assignment, graduated from Mitchell College in 1965 and from the academy in 1969. Both he and his wife, Maureen, were raised in New London.
College President Mary Ellen Jukoski said Olsen is “an exemplar of the Mitchell promise — an alumnus who built on his Mitchell foundation to tackle the world and use the wisdom he gained from extraordinary experiences to make a tremendous difference in our region.”
“A stalwart member of this community throughout his adult life, he sets an ideal example for our graduates,” Jukoski said in a statement.
The commencement ceremony will be held on the Great Lawn on the Mitchell College campus. Seating for the public will be available.
About 180 students are expected to graduate.
