Press release from the Shoreline Summer Youth Job Fair

A job fair for shoreline area youth is coming Thursday, May 1 to Westbrook Town Hall, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. More than 30 area employers committed to hiring youth between the ages of 16 and 24 for their summer openings will attend. Additionally, the American Jobs Center Career Coach, a mobile employment one-stop, will be on site to help the youth complete online job applications.

This is the second year for the Shoreline Summer Youth Job Fair. Last year more than 70 youth were hired by the employers who attended the event. Employers confirmed for this year's gathering are Walgreens, Marquee Cinemas, Payless, Old Navy, Marshalls, TJMaxx, American Eagle Outfitters, Ann Taylor, Calvin Klein, Gap Outlet, Levi Outlet, Nautica, Nike, Sketchers, Nine West, Zumies, Crazy 8, Sunglass Hut, Lindt, Hollister, Dunkin Donuts, Stop & Shop, Radio Shack, Dooney & Bourke, Johnston & Murphy, GH Bass and Company, Coach, Talbots, West Marine, Walmart, Aeropostale, and DKNY. Refreshments for the youth and the employers attending the job fair will be provided by Pasta Vita, Fiore's, and Stop & Shop.

The Summer Youth Job Fair was an idea first generated and promoted by Morgan Wilderman, a senior at Westbrook High School, who witnessed the need in the community.

"Because of the economy it is really hard for kids to find employment since they are often competing for jobs against more experienced workers," she said. "I wanted to do something that would help my fellow students."

Westbrook First Selectman Noel Bishop immediately embraced the idea and offered his assistance.

"This is a great opportunity for the youth in our towns as well as the business community. Youth need a chance at a job and I am delighted that so many employers from our region are willing to provide them that chance!" he said.

Youth interested in a summer job should show up early and dress professionally. Space is limited, so employers interested in participating in the Summer Employment Job Fair are encouraged to contact the First Selectman's office at 860-399-3040 or Morgan Wilderman at 860-391-5193 to reserve a space as soon as possible.
