The shoreline's YMCAs are making it easy—and fun—to celebrate national Healthy Kids Day this Saturday, April 26. Both the Soundview Family YMCA in Branford and the Valley-Shore YMCA in Westbrook are offering a day packed with activities for families.
Busy schedules and life's daily demands can make it difficult for parents to ensure that their children are practicing healthy habits on a regular basis. According to the YMCA's Family Health Snapshot—a survey of parents that gauges their children's activity levels during the school year—fewer than 20 percent of the nation's children get 60 minutes of physical activity, read books for fun, and eat at least eight fruits and vegetables every day.
Learning how to reverse those trends can begin this weekend.
The Valley-Shore Y's Healthy Kids Day event takes place at 201 Spencer Plains Road in Westbrook, from 1 to 4 p.m. The day starts with a Kids Triathlon at 8 a.m. and MLB's Pitch, Hit & Run contest at 10 a.m. For more information, call 860-399-YMCA or visit
The Soundview Family YMCA, 628 Main Street, Branford, holds its Healthy Kids Day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The free community event includes games, a Moon Bounce, Zumba Kids, an adventure course, arts and crafts, dental screenings, face painting, a scuba demo, Touch-a-Truck, a martial arts demo, raffle prizes, and more.
